Becoming Perfect

I DO NOT OWN THIS PICTURE

“Less of others, more of yourself. Less of yourself , more of God”

I’ve never heard this saying a day in my life, but this Sabbath day I was praying, and in my sleep I heard this quote. After a while it later clicked in my head that it wasn’t just a quote, they’re steps.

Steps to what? Thats what I wondered, these are steps to becoming perfect, and we know that only God is perfect. But since we know that God can’t lie, let’s look at what he said.

Genesis 17:1

1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

Yes he said this to Abraham, and it still applies to all of us today. Please visit Luke when you get the chance, you’ll find that Zacharias was blameless.

“Less of Others”

Now when I say less of others, I mean less condemnation of other’s; focusing on their short comings. Hypocrisy against them, and what they can do better while we ourselves are filthy. Here are some scriptures on that,

Condemnation:

Matthew 7:1-5

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

Hypocrisy:

Matthew 24:48-51

48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;

49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;

50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Romans 2:17-24

17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,

18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;

19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,

20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.

21 Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?

22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?

23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?

24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.

1 Corinthians 9:27

27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

“More of Yourself”

Now we have to use the discernment God gave us to understand that “Less of others” does not mean being selfish, or don’t help brothers and sisters. But what this means is to take heed to ourselves, and how we are walking before God because of this,

Romans 14:12-13

12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God

13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.

We are responsible for our own salvation thats why we are instructed to do all of these written here,

Philippians 2:12

12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

1 Corinthians 11:28

28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

2 Corinthians 13:5

5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

The scripture says for us to examine ourselves, not others.

” Less of Yourself”

Now this is the part where tends to get difficult for all of us, because while it’s easy to point out what someone else needs to work on we take less time away from focusing on what we need to do, and how we can become meet for God.  That is why we have ” More of Yourself”. Less of yourself is actually going to be eliminating who we are, it won’t happen over night.

However if we believe we can do all things through Jesus, we can do this.

What most of us don’t pay attention to is the fact that the old us wants to come back so badly. Since we are told to examine ourselves we can prevent that from happening. Get to know yourself, what your weakness is, what you desire ( big or small). Doing this will help you to avoid any temptation that comes to you. Because our flesh wants everything. So let’s look at how we can kill this old man that we all possess.

Psalm 1:1-2

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Whether we believe it or not the thoughts of our mind are very powerful, so powerful sometimes they can cripple us.

We can’t fall prey to the thoughts of our mind no matter how much we want to.

We need to get rid of these,

Galatians 5:19-21

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Do this,

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

So that this can’t happen,

James 1:13-15

13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

2 Peter 2:20-22

20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

1 Corinthians 15:31

31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

How we die daily might be different for everyone (ex. avoiding stumbling blocks). One thing is for sure, we have to redirect every evil thought back to God, and ask for his help. Reading, meditating, fasting, and praying.

Colossians 3:5-9

5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

7In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

Romans 8:13-14

13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

We’re just called the sons of God, which means if we are led by the Spirit ( the Word), we can be perfect.

“More of God”

Since we’re on the topic of perfection, we can now look at how we can be more like God.

Galatians 5:22-25

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Giving:

Matthew 5:42

Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Proverbs 21:13

13 Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.

Mercy:

Matthew 5:43-45

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Balance:

Matthew 23:23

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Leviticus 11:45

45 For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

In a nutshell this is how we can be more like God,

Romans 7:12

12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

Psalm 103:8-9

8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.

This is the process, but if we take it step by step not putting more on ourselves than we can bare this will become second nature to us.

I hope this helped someone in Jesus name.

Peace
